How to Insulate a Cavity Wall

  1. Ensure that all the cavity side of the internal blockwork is thoroughly clean as this will distort the insulation and gaps may form at joints.
  2. Starting at the corner or edge of the wall on the cavity side, take a full length of insulation board and sit it in place, either directly on top of existing insulation or the damp proof tray.
  3. Work the full boards into the centre of the wall and place any cuts here as this maintain a half bond formation throughout the majority of the wall.
  4. Cut a full board in half using a saw.
  5. You will notice that the height of each insulation board (450mm) should match the coursing of the block/brickwork and also the cavity ties.
  6. Make sure all boards are pushed tight together leaving as little gaps as possible.
  7. Insulation clips or rings can now be pressed over each wall tie to secure the boards.
  8. To maintain tight corners builders will often use stainless still 100mm nails.

How to Insulate a Cavity Wall

Over time the approach to insulating a building has change considerably, especially with the introduction of cavity walling. The cavity aims to prevent the passage of moisture from the outer to the inner leaf of block. Insulation can then be introduced to the cavity. This how to shows you how.

Steps

1) Ensure that all the cavity side of the internal blockwork is thoroughly clean as this will distort the insulation and gaps may form at joints. Either use the edge of your trowel of a brick hammer.

2) Starting at the corner or edge of the wall on the cavity side, take a full length of insulation board and sit it in place, either directly on top of existing insulation or the damp proof tray. Do the same at the opposite corner/side.

3) Work the full boards into the centre of the wall and place any cuts here as this maintain a half bond formation throughout the majority of the wall.

4) Cut a full board in half using a saw. Insulation boards should come in dimensions of 1200mm x 450mm, therefore you will end up with a piece of 600mm x 450mm. Place this half on top of the full boards at either end to achieve half bond, and again work the full boards into the centre.

5) You will notice that the height of each insulation board (450mm) should match the coursing of the block/brickwork and also the cavity ties.

6) Make sure all boards are pushed tight together leaving as little gaps as possible.

7) Insulation clips or rings can now be pressed over each wall tie to secure the boards. Clips can vary so be sure to read the manufacturers guide.

8) To maintain tight corners builders will often use stainless still 100mm nails.

Tips

Always use a saw when cutting

Be sure not to leave any gaps between the boards

Make sure the wall you are insulating against is thoroughly cleaned
